Help me identify this mystery 2m beacon
I am hearing this "beacon" on 2 metres on 144.481.4. I know morse code but I cannot for the life of me make out what this is transmitting. It sounds like EA but there's a whole string of characters that are so close together it's damn near impossible to make it out. It really does sound like gobbledygook!! I would welcome any information as to where this beacon is located and what it's supposed to be sending. You can email me at hamradioireland AT gmail DOT com. Thanks.

It sounds like FSK.....Frequency Shift Keying......and you were slightly off frequency.....and if you had gone up or down a few hundred Hz, you would have heard it....a bit like going from USB to LSB
ReplyDeleteMy 2nd guess is that the keyer was faulty :o))
John, that has been suggested to me as the likely source of what I was hearing. I am no expert on these things but it is the most satisfactory explanation right now. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteActually, a good place to check for this kind of thing is the 5B4CY beacon on 28.220 MHz when it comes in. You will hear cw at 2 different spots as you tune past. One will make sense, the other one won't.
ReplyDeleteWell that makes complete sense then. I can hear this all the time, just 1kc below GB3NGI, which I can also hear all the time. Mystery solved I'd say !!! Thanks John
